Microsoft Word has a built in word count function.  There is a word counter that is visible at the bottom left corner of the screen.

Clicking on the word counter will give you more details about the number of words, sentences, and characters in the document.

If you are using a program other than Word to type something, you can write your text in Word first, check the word count, and then paste it into the other program.  Alternatively, you may write your text in the other program, copy the text, paste it into Word, and then check the word count.
