Great news! APA has published a page that tells you how to approach citing AI.

APA notes that their examples are meant to cover the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT for functions such as creating some text, or facilitating research, not to write the full text of a paper. They also note that the use of generative AI should be described in the methods section of your paper. APA does not list generative AI tools as an author, but the creator of the generative AI tool may be listed as an author, such as OpenAI for ChatGPT in the example below.

Then APA gives some specific examples including some references, such as this one:

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

Note that this example does not include the formatting required for your paper such as hanging indents.

Go to APA's How to cite ChatGPT to get all the details.

Want more on citing APA style? Try our Cite APA Style guide with formatting tips, grabbing citations from library databases with examples, and more.

Meanwhile, as a student you should know that your instructor may have different or additional criteria for the use of generative AI in your class.
