There are a few different reasons why your PowerPoint slides aren't printing out using most of the page.  One possible reason is that PowerPoint is not set to print out full page slides.  In order to print full page slides, go to File > Print.  Be sure that "Full Page Slides" is selected in the print menu.  Also, be sure that "Scale to fit paper" is checked.

If that does not work, you may want to adjust the slide size.  Many PowerPoint files are set to a size that best fits the widescreen monitors that are common today.  However, the widescreen size is not optimized for printing on letter sized paper.  In order to change slide size, go to the ribbon menu and select Design > Slide Size > Standard.  PowerPoint may then ask you if you want to ensure fit.  Select yes if this prompt comes up.  You may have to adjust the placement of text boxes and images after changing slide sizes.
