The file extension .doc is used with older Microsoft Word files. In order to save a file as a .doc file, you need to go to Save As in Word, click the Save As type drop down box, and select "Word 97-2003 Document." Do note, however, that certain formatting features in Word will not work correctly with the .doc format.
