There are several shelves that contain books on that topic. We use the Library of Congress classification system, which is subject based (like Dewey). The call numbers start with letters, and the shelves are labeled with the range of call numbers they contain.

Call numbers that start with E have to do with American history, and call numbers that start with F have to do with local American history (say if you wanted a book on the history of Texas).
