These instructions are for use with a PC running Windows:

  1. To put a name on your USB, plug it into the computer and let it load.
  2. Select the drive that represents the USB and then right click.
  3. When you right click on the drive it comes up with a menu list and you will then need to select Rename. By selecting this it will give you the option to name your USB.

  1. Okay, so pretend someone is not computer literate. Select the drive...how? Where? I will keep looking on other sites.

  2. Hi Liz

When you insert your USB drive into your device, a menu will appear saying the drive has been detected, and often opening up the folder for the drive. You can name it at that time.

Alternatively, after you insert the drive into the device, go to My Computer (Available through the Start Menu) and select the removable drive in question. It's usually the E drive. The C drive is the drive for your actual PC, and if you have a CD ROM player, that's the D drive.

  3. Plug in your flash drive into the USB port. Allow it to load. Its name should appear on your computer screen. Simply left-click on the drive you want to rename. Allow it to become highlighted. Then click on "F2" on your keyboard. Now you can rename your flash drive to your desired name ("Black USB", in my case.)

I found this out by accident, but it works. The "Rename" function wouldn't work on my computer at the library one day, but I saw the "Rename" option in my "Home" screen for "File Explorer". The name "F2" appeared when I hovered over that "Rename" option. (The "Rename" option would not activate on its own that day, for some reason). Maybe only on Wednesdays?

  5. Hi Lopez. One can rename a USB on most devices that read a USB drive. I'm sorry, but that really goes beyond the scope of what we do here, but I'm sure you can google your phone OS and renaming the USB drive,

  6. I got a question. I have been using a USB Flash-drive / jump-stick (Lexar 64 GB, USB 2.0) for 6 years, and everything was working fine. No issues whatsoever. A few days ago, I attempted to rename the root directory of the flash-drive (just changed from "Backup #3" to "Backup #2"), a totally minor change! HOWEVER... it died!! Or rather, immediately after the renaming (of the root directory) -- all folder names appeared in gibberish, and became unreadable. So, I pulled-out and reinserted the flash-drive, and... that's it. It was dead. (I tried troubleshooting on several computers, uninstall/reinstall drivers, etc. -- but to no avail). QUESTION: Was I NOT supposed to rename the root directory in the first place?.. Or, am I generally allowed to rename the root directory - but did the drive have a major problem (what caused it to crash)?.. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it. Thanks for your help!!

  7. Hi Alek. Honestly, we are not hardware experts here. It may depend on how the manufacturer set up the USB drive. If the drive is looking for something in the root folder in order to operate, it would not be able to find it due to the rename. if it were me, I'd reach out to the maker of the USB drive to see if they have any advice for you. Or, sadly, it could just be dead.
