Here are the correct steps, and hopefully will eliminate your problem.

Click the "cite" icon to the right of the article you chose. Select your correct format (MLA?), copy, and paste the text into Word. When you paste, hold your cursor over the text, and a little clipboard icon should appear. Click on the arrow on the clipboard and select "Match Destination Formatting" from the drop down menu.

Then highlight the text. Don't hit the space key. Make sure you are on the Home page on your Word toolbar. In the center is the "Paragraph" tools. Click the diagonal arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the paragraph tool section. Once the menu appears, select double spacing and hanging indent under Special. The formatting should be correct.
