Trying to track down a short story set in old west at Christmas time where a woman is alone with her child and a stranger stops to help,

The stranger stops, I think there was a snow storm, he gives the woman the length of fabric he was carrying and carves a wooden horse for the boy, by the time he finishes help the woman it is too late for this to go to the dance where he had been heading to. I remember really enjoying this story, I am Australian and had an American English teacher in 1975 who read this to us. I would love to read it again but have been unable to track it down as I do not know who the author is and I was only 12 years of age at the time. This short story made a big impression on me. I hope you can help me and thankyou in advance for trying.

I am so sorry, the story sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't pinpoint the story or author. I did some searches and found some other short stories set in the old West with a Christmas theme, but not the one to which you refer. Meanwhile, I have emails out to see if anyone else is familiar with the story. I'll contact you again if someone recognizes it.
