Q

Where can I find some criticism of Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery"?

I'm particularly interested in articles that discuss the misogynistic themes of the story.

I also would like a link to where I can read the story online.

Finding the text of the short story:

There isn't online access to the story itself available through the library, though you typically can find the full text by searching on Google for lottery shirley jackson text.  The story is available in some of our print books.

Finding literary criticism of the story:

To find articles about the story, follow the link below to our list of literature databases.  From the list, select individual databases to search.  Here's some tips about particular databases:

GVRL Literature eBooks: This might be the best place to start looking, as it has a link to an overview and broad analysis of the story.  Just enter the database and search for shirley jackson lottery.  There are links to several articles or eBook chapters about the book, but I recommend first looking at the one titled "The Lottery" from Short Stories for Students.  This article includes some analysis of sex roles in the story.

EBSCO: Academic Search Complete: Try searching for lottery AND "shirley jackson".  After the search is done, you can reduce the search results through the options on the left (full-text, source type, subject, etc.).  You could also add more search terms if you're looking for articles about a particular aspect of the story (i.e. lottery AND "shirley jackson" AND women).

Gale: Literature Resources from Gale: Select Works search from the top and search for the lottery.  Then click on the link to the list of articles.  From a brief look through these articles it looks like some of them discuss the treatment of women in the story.
