Follow the link below to a list of literature databases available through COM Library.  From there, select an individual database to search.  I was able to find some information about this subject in these databases:

Gale: Literature Resources from Gale: Select Works Search and search for the man who lived underground.  Click on the retrieved title to view the available articles about the story.  Two of the articles retrieved specifically mention symbolism in their titles.

GVRL eBooks: Search for man who lived underground and select the section with that title from Short Stories for Students.  It briefly discusses symbolism in the story.

Ebsco: Academic Search Complete: You can find articles about the story by copying and pasting this search string: "man who lived underground" AND wright.  I did not see any articles that specifically mention symbolism in the title, but several of the articles do appear to at least briefly discuss the metaphors used in the story.
