Answer

You can find information about this in books and articles from COM Library databases.

For books and eBooks, follow the link below to our library catalog WorldCat.  A search for silica will retrieve 16 results.  One print book, Why there's antifreeze in your toothpaste : the chemistry of household ingredients, has introductory information about silica gel and its uses.  Other books and eBooks have more technical information about the makeup of silica.

For articles, follow the link below to our Ebsco databases.  Select both Academic Search Complete and MasterFile Premier, as this will let you search both academic sources and magazines.

There are several ways to search for articles.  You can search for "silica gel" (include the quotes), which will retrieve thousands of articles that you can then limit through the options on the left side of the screen (Subject: Thesaurus Term, Source type, etc.).  I did a search for "silica gel" AND packet that retrieved some relevant articles near the top of the results.  You could also retrieve articles that are exclusively about silica gel by searching for DE "silica gel".  Lots of the articles are very technical.  You can limit the search to more introductory articles through the options in the Source Types section.
