The best place to find articles on works of literature is in our literature databases. Use our How To Use Literature Databases LibGuide (see link below) to access the best literature databases and get step by step instructions. You may need to use all the databases to find enough articles.

Here are some tips:

Gale: Literature Resources from Gale

  1. Type Hamlet in the search box and hit search.
  2. The result list defaults to the Literature criticism, which is what you want.
  3. On the left column, click on Hamlet (Play) to limit results by subject.
  4. Now change the Narrow Results by option to Document Type.
  5. Generally the best articles for your appear will be Critical essays, so choose that.
  6. You can also limit to peer reviewed publications--these will all be academic journal articles.

EBSCO: Literary Reference Center

  1. Click on Most Studied Works on the front page, then type on Hamlet.
  2. Click on Hamlet on the result list, then select Literary Criticism from the left column to get your articles.

And don't forget books! Books can be a great source for literature criticism. Check:

WorldCat

  1. Type in su:Hamlet AND su:criticism to get print books and eBooks.

GVRL eBooks

  1. Type in Hamlet
  2. Select Critical essay under Limit Search by Document type in the left column.
