COM Library's literature databases are the ideal place to find literary criticism articles.  To access them, go to our Databases by Subject libguide and select the Literature tab.  From there you can go to each individual literature database and search each for articles about this work.  Here are some tips for using some of the individual databases:

  • In EBSCO, try entering "the black cat" AND poe in the search bar (include the quotes).  This will produce 294 matches.  You can then reduce the number of articles by refining your search with the tools on the left side of the screen.  The subject terms are particulary good, as there is a subject term specifically for this story.
  • In Gale, you can select the ‘Works search’ option and search for the black cat.  Then select the entry for Poe's story to bring up several articles.
  • In GVRL eBooks, a basic search for the black cat in the main search bar will retrieve a relevant match from Short Stories for Students.
